Wesleyan is partnering with Macon artist and owner of Mama Hawk Draws, Erin Hawkins, to paint a mural supporting reproductive rights and equality for women which upon completion, will be a permanent installation on the College’s campus. This is part of the “Rep the Rights” student-led initiative focusing on gender parity and equality for women.
“Hey! I’m Erin, a designer, artist, avid reader, flamingo lover, and queso consumer. After several years as an art director in the corporate world, in 2013 I created Mama Hawk Draws to pursue my passion for graphic design, hand lettering, and to be my own boss. I use mixed media and a fun, quirky vision to work with clients to figure out the best way to tell their story.
I believe in the importance of community and finding the good in life. As a small business owner, I have a special interest in supporting other women, and as a mom, I am passionate about exposing kids to art and showing them how they can use it to impact their lives and society.
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from James Madison University and now live in Macon, Georgia, with my husband and three tiny humans. I am one of the founding members and president of Macon Periods Easier, founder of Creative Conversations, and a board member of Macon Art Alliance. When I’m not designing, I’m with my kiddos, color-coordinating books on my bookshelf, or making tasty salads for lunch.“
Artist Inspiration
When Hawkins found out about the overturning of Roe v. Wade, she was angry, frustrated, and felt like she had lost power. The mural was a way for her to feel as if she could regain some power by “normalizing the conversation.”
“The female body is amazing, beautiful, and capable of so much,” Hawkins says.
Her inspiration for the mural design came from the artistic styles of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe.
About the Mural
Hawkins’ mural design will be displayed on an 8 ft. x 8 ft. canvas, temporarily set up in Anderson Dining Hall, while students and the community contribute to the painting process this week. When complete, the mural will be revealed at our Rep the Rights rally on Friday, Sept. 30., before being placed on permanent display on campus.
