Chronic absenteeism continues to be a challenge for Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more days of school in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In response, GaDOE initiated a statewide effort including a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and focused support for districts with high needs to improve daily attendance rates.
In 2025, state lawmakers updated Georgia’s school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The new law also introduced additional reporting rules and works with programs aimed at helping students earn diplomas through alternative options.
For 2026, Georgia posted an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, an improvement over the national average of 15:1.
