Upson Regional Medical Center issued the following announcement on Jan. 7.
If you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke, time to treatment matters. Upson Regional Medical Center is happy to announce its designation as a Primary Stroke Center by DNV-GL.
The DNV Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. Certification shows Upson Regional addresses the full spectrum of stroke care including diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and education as well as establishing clear methods to assess outcomes.
According to the American Heart Association, nearly 800,000 people in the United States experience a stroke each year. Strokes can have long-term effects on the brain, so it is important to act fast when you see warning signs such as face drooping, slurred speech, and weakness in the arms.
“Upson Regional being designated as a Primary Stroke Center is an amazing achievement. I am excited to be a part of the comprehensive and robust neurology services we offer to the residents of Thomaston and surrounding counties. Timely and up to date stroke care is directly related to reducing long term disability, and community education is key to risk factor reduction. Our goal for stroke services at URMC is fewer strokes with better outcomes,” said Upson Regional Stroke Coordinator Gina Maday.
