In Georgia schools, chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant challenge after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, per the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE introduced initiatives such as a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach effort, and targeted interventions for districts most in need to improve attendance rates.
A new law approved by Georgia lawmakers in 2025 prohibits expulsion solely for absenteeism, revises school attendance requirements, and introduces comprehensive data collection and expanded pathways for earning a diploma.
In 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was roughly 14:1, a figure lower than the national average of 15:1, according to recent data.
