Upson-Lee High School reports 11 Asian students enrolled for 2024-25

Reports from the Georgia Department of Education indicate that Upson-Lee High School counted 11 Asian students enrolled for the 2024-25 school year, unchanged from the prior year.

Total enrollment at Upson-Lee High School stood at 1,157 students for the 2024-25 school year. Of those, Asian students comprised about 1% of the student body—the smallest demographic represented at the school.

The school operates within the Thomaston-Upson County School District and is administered through its central office in Thomaston.

During the 2024-25 school year, Upson-Lee High School recorded the district’s largest number of Asian students, with 11 enrolled out of four total schools in Thomaston-Upson County School District.

The National Center for Education Statistics reported that public schools in Georgia had a student population that was approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

The Georgia Department of Education noted that chronic absenteeism persisted as a significant challenge after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024. To address this, the state education agency introduced a comprehensive strategy featuring real-time attendance tracking, public information efforts, and focused assistance for districts most at risk.

In 2025, Georgia updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion strictly for absenteeism. The legislation also imposed new data reporting requirements and supported alternative paths for students working toward diplomas.
