Middle District of Georgia U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary has appointed two District Election Officers (DEO) to oversee the office's efforts in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024.
The DEOs will manage complaints related to voting rights concerns, threats against election officials or staff, and election fraud. These efforts are conducted in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.
"Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election," stated U.S. Attorney Leary. "Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence."
The Department of Justice plays a significant role in deterring discrimination and intimidation at polling stations, addressing threats against election officials, and combating election fraud. The Election Day Program aims to ensure public confidence by providing local points of contact for reporting potential federal election law violations.
Federal law protects against crimes such as threatening violence against election officials, voter intimidation or bribery, vote buying and selling, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots without voter consent. It also includes protections under the Voting Rights Act for voters needing assistance due to disability or language barriers.
"The franchise is the cornerstone of American democracy," said U.S. Attorney Leary. "We all must ensure that those who are entitled to the franchise can exercise it if they choose and that those who seek to corrupt it are brought to justice."
For complaints during the upcoming election, DEOs will be available while polls are open and can be reached at 478-621-2698 or USAGAM.DEO@usdoj.gov. Additionally, FBI special agents will be available nationwide for allegations of election fraud on Election Day via 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or tips.fbi.gov.
Complaints about possible federal voting rights violations can also be submitted directly to the Civil Rights Division through their website or by phone at 800-253-3931.
"Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the assistance of the American electorate," emphasized U.S. Attorney Leary.
In cases involving violence or intimidation at polling places, individuals are advised to contact local authorities immediately by calling 911 before reaching out to federal authorities.
