Atrium Health Peyton Anderson Cancer Center announced Wednesday the addition of medical oncology services, creating a full continuum of care available for central Georgia patients. Medical oncology physicians help patients manage drug, chemotherapy and surgical treatment plans for cancer. Other treatment services include radiation and surgical oncology, which also are available at Atrium Health Navicent.
“In addition to expanding access to cancer care, Atrium Health Navicent is making it easier for patients to get the help they need, whether it be for prevention, diagnosis, treatment or survivorship,” said Atrium Health Navicent Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrice Walker.
Leading the medical oncology practice will be Dr. Katie L.M. McQueen Amaker, who comes to Atrium Health Navicent from Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans. Her practice is located inside the Atrium Health Peyton Anderson Cancer Center on First Street in Macon.
After receiving her undergraduate degree from Mercer University in Macon, McQueen Amaker attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed a residency with the Greenville Health System in Greenville, S.C. She then completed clinical fellowships in combined adult medical oncology and pediatric hematology/oncology at LSU Health New Orleans. McQueen Amaker is certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics.
“Making cancer treatment more convenient will have a tremendous impact for the patients we diagnose and treat at Atrium Health Peyton Anderson Cancer Center, giving them more tools in their fight,” said Atrium Health Peyton Anderson Cancer Center Director Dr. Paul Dale. “With Dr. McQueen Amaker onboard, patients will be able to see their doctor and receive treatment from our state-of-the-art infusion center all under one roof.”
