Monroe County issued the following announcement on May 25.
The Monroe County Planning & Zoning Board approved by a 3-0 vote on Monday, May 23 an applicant’s request for a conditional use in agricultural zoning to build a private campground on a 5.5-acre tract at 263 Mayfield Road.
The applicant, Bernard Johnson, has requested a conditional use in agricultural zoning for the purpose of building a private campground on a 5.5-acre tract at 263 Mayfield Road. The proposed campground will be for the personal use of his family and will not be open to the public. No more than eight recreational vehicles (RVs) will be present at the proposed campground at one time, and no RVs are permitted to stay at the location for more than 30 days. A variance in agricultural zoning will also be necessary because the campground will be built on fewer than the minimum 25 acres. Johnson and William Hindsman are the property owners.
No one was opposed to the request.
P&Z member Red Ezelle immediately motioned to approve Johnson’s request, which was seconded by P&Z member Chad Tyler and approved 3-0. P&Z members Chuck Benson and David Hunter were absent from Monday’s meeting.
Johnson had originally applied last month to re-zone the tract from agricultural to manufactured home district (RM) instead of applying for a conditional use in agriculture. Although the P&Z Board approved Johnson’s initial request on April 25, Monroe County Commissioners urged Johnson on May 3 to withdraw his initial request and re-apply because they were unwilling to change the zoning classification in what is primarily a residential area. Johnson agreed to re-apply by requesting a conditional use in agriculture, and the P&Z Board approved his new application on Monday.
Monroe County Commissioners will have the final say on the matter at their next scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7.
