MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY: MGA’s Museum Of Technology Joins Georgia Association Of Museums

Exhibit

Middle Georgia State University issued the following announcement on Oct. 13.

Middle Georgia State University’s Museum of Technology (MoT) is now a member of the Georgia Association of Museums (GAM).

GAM is a statewide organization dedicated to serving a diverse membership in a way that establishes a responsive network, provides a resource base, and promotes professionalism so that Georgia's museum community is strong, effective, and proactive. Among other things, the organization’s purpose is to encourage growth and improve professional practices of museums and non-profit galleries throughout the state.

“This is a significant step forward in the ongoing development of the Museum of Technology,” said Tina Ashford, MGA associate professor of information technology and MoT faculty curator. “We are committed to becoming the premier museum dedicated to the restoration, preservation, and, most importantly, sharing of personal computers and their history.”

The Museum of Technology launched in 2018 when IT students were able to take possession of one unused display case from the MGA Library and fill it with a couple of vintage computers and equipment. Over the next year, the MoT expanded to include six more display cases filled with complete personal computer systems to peripheral equipment to pop-culture items. Items in the collection, now housed in dedicated space in the library on the Macon Campus, are rotated periodically. The museum is open to students, MGA employees, and the public during regular library hours.

Among Ashford’s goals is to have more IT students involved in the museum to make presentations at history conferences, vintage computer fairs, and area community groups.
