In the 2024-25 school year, Pike County Elementary counted 38 African American students, matching the total from the prior year, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

The overall enrollment at Pike County Elementary stood at 774 students for 2024-25. African American students made up 5% of the school’s population, marking them as the second-largest group in the building.

Pike County Elementary is part of the Pike County School District, headquartered in Zebulon.

Of the district’s five schools, Pike County High School had the highest number of African American students enrolled in 2024-25, with 73 students.

Georgia’s public schools educated more than 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. The bulk of enrollment was found in elementary grades, tallying 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle schools with 388,733 students (22.7%), and high schools with 539,092 students (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism has become a significant concern in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of academic days in 2024, figures from the Georgia Department of Education show. In response, GaDOE introduced a statewide effort featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach campaign, and targeted support for districts most in need to encourage regular attendance.

Georgia lawmakers in 2025 enacted a bill revising school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The legislation also requires new reporting, and it works with initiatives that provide students with alternative routes to obtaining diplomas. Read more here.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio reached about 14:1, an improvement over the national ratio of 15:1.
