Veterans Elementary School’s enrollment of Hispanic students reached 126 in the 2024-25 school year, marking a 32.6% increase compared with the previous year, according to data from the Georgia Department of Education.
The same data found total enrollment at Veterans Elementary School was 665 students for 2024-25. Hispanic students represented 19% of the total population, making them the school’s second-largest student group.
The school operates within the Bibb County School District headquartered in Macon.
Of the 34 schools in the district, Porter Elementary School reported the highest Hispanic student enrollment in 2024-25, with 155 students.
The National Center for Education Statistics identified Georgia’s public school population as approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.
Chronic absenteeism persists in Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, GaDOE rolled out a statewide initiative including a real-time attendance dashboard, public outreach, and targeted support for areas with higher needs to improve attendance.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers updated school attendance policies, prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also added reporting rules and coordinated with diploma programs offering alternative earning routes.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, which surpassed the national ratio of 15:1.
