Georgia Power has opened a new transportation and logistics training center in DeKalb County, which is now the largest facility of its kind on the East Coast.
Tavarez Holston, president of Georgia Piedmont Technical College, described the project as an eight-year effort. “Here we’re going to train Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) workers, electrical line workers…that entire industry is what we’re trying to serve to make sure they have a trained workforce,” Holston said.
The creation of the center was supported by a $6 million grant from the state and involved partnerships with MARTA, The City of Stonecrest, Georgia Power, as well as a $4 million investment from DeKalb County.
Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, CEO of DeKalb County, commented on the significance of the new facility. “This facility is a game changer for the state of Georgia. It shows their commitment to technical education,” she said.
The Macon County Chamber of Commerce also supports workforce development and educational initiatives aimed at regional growth. According to its official website, it advances economic vitality and quality of life in Macon County through networking opportunities, advocacy, resources for local businesses, and support for tourism and workforce programs. The organization has been active in these efforts for over a century.
