The Georgia Department of Education reported that 5 Asian students were enrolled at Dames Ferry Elementary School for the 2024-25 term.
School data showed a total student population of 545, with Asian students representing 1%—the smallest demographic among the school’s enrollment.
The campus is part of the Jones County School District, headquartered in Gray.
Of the seven schools in the district, Gray Station Middle School had the largest number of Asian students in 2024-25, with an enrollment of 6.
A total of more than 1.7 million students attended public schools in Georgia, according to figures in the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment was highest at the elementary level (787,206 students, or 45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle school (22.7%) and 539,092 in high school (31.4%).
The post-pandemic era has seen chronic absenteeism continue to challenge Georgia schools. According to the Georgia Department of Education, 20.7% of students missed at least 10% of school days in 2024. Measures to address this include a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide awareness effort and targeted support for districts with high needs, launched under a new GaDOE initiative to increase daily attendance.
In 2025, the Georgia legislature enacted a law that prohibits expelling students based solely on absenteeism. Requirements for reporting attendance have also expanded, aligning with programs that allow students to complete diplomas through alternative routes.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, an improvement over the national figure of 15:1.
