U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the nation’s older population continues to rise as the number of younger residents falls. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans aged 65 and older rose by 13%, while residents under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The older adult demographic has expanded significantly over the last century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that nearly half of adults in this age range—about 28 million—are expected to need long-term care or services. The projection further estimates that over a third may ultimately require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, said. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
