Atrium Health Navicent issued the following announcement on Apr. 28.

Atrium Health Navicent invites the community to celebrate National Occupational Therapy Month in April by learning more about how teammates at Atrium Health Navicent Rehabilitation Hospital and in Atrium Health Navicent’s inpatient settings are using science-driven, evidence-based therapy to help patients live their best lives after experiencing an injury, illness or disability.

Occupational therapy benefits people of all ages by creating a customized treatment plan to help patients overcome potential deficits and better participate in their daily activities.

“Occupational therapy focuses on both internal and external factors to increase an individual’s independence. This may include increasing strength, balance, and range of motion, as well as educating patients on compensatory strategies, energy conservation techniques, use of adaptive equipment and environmental modifications,” said Carrie Braun, assistant vice president of System Therapy Services at Atrium Health Navicent Rehabilitation Hospital. Occupational therapists work with patients with a wide variety of diagnoses including orthopedic injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, weakness following an injury or operation, and more. But occupational therapy isn’t just for people recovering from an injury or illness. Anyone who is experiencing difficulty participating in the daily tasks that are important or meaningful to them, such as bathing, getting dressed, cooking, and participating in leisure activities may benefit from occupational therapy. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual with inpatient and outpatient options available.

Services are available by physician referral. Individuals seeking additional information about rehabilitation services are asked to call 478-201-6747, or visit www.navicenthealth.org/service-center/rehabilitation-hospital-navicent-health.
