Atrium Health Navicent’s mobile mammography coach has provided nearly 1,300 breast cancer screenings across central and south Georgia since it began operations in January. The 36-foot vehicle was funded by a congressional spending allocation and brings advanced cancer screening technology to communities that may face barriers to healthcare access.
Laura Smith, the county extension coordinator for Telfair County, arranged for the coach to visit her community after seeing a Facebook post about its services. Since then, the coach has made monthly visits to Telfair County. Smith herself received a mammogram during one of these visits. “It was hands down one of the best mammogram experiences I’ve ever had,” she said. “They were very knowledgeable, very good at making you comfortable and talking you through everything to let you know what’s coming.”
The mobile unit offers screenings using a 3D digital breast imaging system operated by female technologists trained in mammography. Each session lasts about 20 minutes and is designed to be private and comfortable. Results are typically available within two business days, with follow-up appointments scheduled promptly if needed.
“It’s vitally important that we do all we can to help more women receive life-changing screening services,” said Atrium Health Georgia Market President Delvecchio Finley. “Atrium Health Navicent’s mobile mammography coach has allowed us to detect more cancers early when they’re easier to treat and outcomes are more favorable, making a real impact on women’s health.”
Breast cancer remains the second most common cancer among American women. Experts recommend baseline screening for all women at age 40, with some younger women needing earlier screenings based on individual risk factors.
“With greater access to mammograms, breast cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence,” said Dr. Rogerio Lilenbaum, Atrium Health Navicent Cancer Service Line leader. “While new therapies have greatly improved treatment, early detection is our most powerful tool in the fight against what can be a very deadly disease.”
The mobile mammography coach will continue its schedule throughout the region this fall, stopping at various locations including McRae, Milledgeville, Warner Robins, Monticello, Macon, Fort Valley, and Irwinton over the next several weeks.
